Beneficial bacteria present in a healthy colon, is responsible for a variety of functions including digestion and especially elimination. These helpful bacteria can come from many sources, especially fermented foods. Prebiotics, found in many foods, can be used by the body to manufacture these healthy bacteria. Unfortunately, the foods that can provide these building blocks for increased gut bacteria are often deficient or missing altogether, making it impossible for the body to manufacture good gut bacteria in sufficient amounts. This can lead to constipation and/or diarrhea or both.
When elimination is slowed down toxins in waste can build up and be reabsorbed into the body, leading to many other possible problems. We must also keep in mind that our immune system depends on these good bacteria for much of its function. This is another excellent reason to maintain a good balance of beneficial bacteria internally. Eating fermented foods and taking a probiotic supplement can help ensure that this is accomplished.
